Region

Maskeliya Region, Sri Lanka

Maskeliya, in Sri Lanka's central highlands, is a renowned tea-growing region known for its high-quality Ceylon teas. Situated at an elevation of 1,200 to 1,800 meters, the area benefits from a cool, temperate climate that is ideal for cultivating tea. The picturesque landscape, featuring Adam’s Peak and the serene Castlereagh Reservoir, adds to the beauty of Maskeliya and provides an excellent environment for tea cultivation. The rolling hills and misty conditions, coupled with well-drained soil, are perfect for growing high-grown teas.

Temperatures in the region range between 12°C and 25°C, with consistent rainfall, especially during monsoon seasons. This combination of rain, sunshine, and mist supports the growth of tea leaves that develop a bright appearance with unique floral and citrus notes. The Castlereagh Reservoir not only adds scenic value but also plays a vital role in local agriculture. Tea in Maskeliya is harvested by hand to ensure only the tender young leaves are plucked, resulting in a brew that is light and brisk with a bright golden liquor. The Norwood estates in Maskeliya, enriched by the natural beauty of the reservoir, embody Sri Lanka’s rich tea heritage, producing teas that reflect the best of the highlands.
